Hello!
I am Miss Utah 2014, Karlie Major, and welcome to my website, Get Real Utah!
One of the many opportunities that accompanies being Miss Utah is the ability I have to share my personal platform, an issue of my choice, throughout the state. I've been able to work with young students at elementary schools, teens and young adults, parents and even grandparents on my platform, Get Real: Using Media Smarts to Promote a Positive Body Image.
After spending six months working in an eating disorder and recovery center I knew this was an issue I wanted to address. I was working as a direct care supervisor for the patients in the home, and will never forget the amount of time we spent monitoring the media that the patients were allowed to view. There were no beauty magazines allowed, certain TV shows weren't to be played in the house and one of the few things that I found these "forbidden" materials to have in common, was the media and the unrealistic body expectations it portrayed. Of course this type of media wasn't allowed because it was extremely triggering for the patients trying to overcome anorexia and bulimia.
Although I am no longer working in this clinic, I have made it my personal mission to reach out and share my message with all those willing to listen. I hope to encourage others to hold themselves to realistic expectations, and to find worth in who they are and what they have to offer, not in the number on the scale. By learning to recognize the impact digitally manipulated images have on shaping our body image, and through understanding the un-human and often unattainable looks they produce, we can get real in our own expectations for ourselves. In addition to Get Real Utah, I am also an independent advocate for Beauty Redefined and support their message on taking back beauty and teaching people to recognize and reject harmful messages about female bodies in media and cultural discourse.
I have seen firsthand the impact the media can have on shaping our body image, and I strongly believe that through early education we can help prevent some of the devastating effects that stem from poor body image and low self-esteem. I have seen the challenges our youth are facing, and I’ve heard the insecurities they struggle with each day, and my goal is to do all I can to help build the confidence and self-esteem of those struggling.
